SPEAKER: Douglas Bridges (Mathematics & Statistics, University of Canterbury) TITLE: Differentiating x^n in a Ring ABSTRACT: It is well known (?) that the product rule of di¤erentiation can be derived from the sum rule and the 2nd power property, d/dx(u^2) = 2u*du/dx. In this talk I discuss conditions under which the additivity and nth power property of a mapping D of a ring into itself ensure that D satis?es the analogue of the product rule. The (minimal) necessary information about rings will be included in the talk.
